Reading Development Cell

Functions

1. To prepare a graded reading series of books in Hindi and English on topics of     children’s interest, experiences and needs. The series will initially be intended for     children of Classes I and II and will later be extended to cover higher classes. It is     planned to have approximately 40 titles for this level. These could be a combination     of freshly prepared books and selections from existing publications of NCERT as well     as other organisations such as NBT, CBT etc. or classics, which could be edited,     rewritten and retold. Though non-textual in nature the stories in the books can subtly     touch upon art, craft, heritage crafts, environment, legends, folklore, fantasy,     hygiene, technology and mathematical concepts while subtly brushing up the     reader’s language skills.

2.  (a)  To prepare a handbook/manual for teachers so as to enable them to put the      series to best possible use in schools. The handbook/manual shall also make the      teachers privy to the significance of the series.

     (b) To organise widespread teacher orientation programmes where teachers are      sensitised towards creating efficient young readers by intervening differently at      different stages of development. The teachers shall also be made aware of the      nature and extent of intervention required at each stage so that each child reaches      her individual best. During the orientation programme, teachers may interact with      materials developers and provide insights in the preparation of the proposed graded      series.
